　　多年以来，海伦都是大家公认的模范妻子，忠实而称职。她的丈夫查尔斯则是亚特兰大知名的法律事务顾问，事业如日中天的他是个典型的成功男人。夫妇二人锦衣玉食，有最漂亮的汽车，多处豪华地产和奢华的别墅、游泳池、网球场以及数不清的财富。可以毫不夸张地说，麦卡特夫妇拥有他们想要拥有的一切。在远离城市的地方，他们拥有一块属于自己的天堂。然而，当他们即将迎来结婚18周年纪念日之际，查尔斯却突然提出了离婚，海伦的天堂开始崩塌了。更加令海伦无法忍受的是，丈夫突然要将她扫地出门的原因竟然是为了给其他女人让位。

　　不久，海伦将所有属于自己的东西连同她的悲伤一道全都装上了远行的汽车。就这样，她告别了以往熟悉的生活，转而投身于一夜之间就变得陌生了的世界。她失去了他，似乎也意味着失去了生命中的一切。接下来，在朋友和家人的帮助下痛苦潦倒的海伦终于鼓起勇气，并开始摸索着找寻重新掌控环境与命运的方式。然而，海伦悲剧般的遭遇却很快变得十分滑稽，尤其伴着那些所谓的“指导”和“帮助”一件件出人意料的事情也接踵而至……
